Revelation in raid at IT official’s premises

Bhopal, Mar 02: Income Tax Assistant Commissioner, trapped by CBI on February 26, reportedly owns a palatial bungalow at his ancestral place Dabra. The splendid structure worth more than Rs 50 lakh is said to be registered in name of the IT official’s mother. Besides, a Santro car was also found in possession of the arrested official’s eldest brother’s possession.

Interestingly, the IT Assistant Commissioner is an officer of 2004 Batch of Indian Revenue Services (IRS) and got his first posting in 2006 in Ratlam after completing training. Later, he was posted in Indore where he was caught red-handed along with his Chartered Accountant (CA) for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 9 lakh. The officer allegedly amassed huge wealth in short tenure of less than two years. He is also said to be owner of a house at Kalindi Nagar in Indore. 

A factory owner, Abhay Agrawal lodged a complaint against the IT officer Pankaj Gupta alleging that the latter has been demanding Rs 9 lakh as kickback for mending certain irregularities came to light during IT survey. A team of CBI led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammed Salim Khan arrested the IT official and his CA SS Mundra. Later, the officer and CA were sent to CBI custody for one week after being produced in the Court of Special Judge Sarita Singh in Indore.

Sources informed that the IT officer has confessed that he owns a bungalow costing more than Rs 50 lakh in Dabra. A loan worth Rs 8 lakh was procured from State Bank of Indore, Dabra for constructing the structure. Besides, the officer reportedly also confessed to possessing a Santro car, cash and jewelry. Youngest among the four brothers, Gupta allegedly amassed the wealth disproportionate to his income in less than two-year tenure. Two elder brothers of the accused is said to be transporter while the third sibling is said to be preparing for public service examination. Meanwhile, the CBI has seized about half-a-dozen bank accounts of absconding Income Tax Officer.
