Bhopal: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the Union Government for forest land diversion for Amelia coal block and operation of international flights from Bhopal and Indore airports. He has written separate letters in this regard to Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Jayanti Natrajan and Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh. In the letter to Jayanti Natrajan, Chief Minister Chouhan has informed that Amelia coal block has been allocated to the MP State Mining Corporation Limited (MPSMCL). The MPSMCL has got all the requisite statutory clearances for operation of this coal block except the diversion of forest land. Sixty percent coal produced from this block is to be supplied to the Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited.
In the letter, the Chief Minister said that he is given to understand that due to issue pertaining to what is seen as corridor of elephants, forest permission is not being given. The block is situated in the Singrauli Basin alongwith 8 other coal blocks. The Ministry for Environment and Forests has approved an integrated wildlife conservation plan for all these nine coal blocks. On the basis of this approved integrated wildlife conservation plan, grant of Stage-II Forest Clearance in respect of Amelia (North) has been accorded by MoEF. Similarly, Stage-I Forest Clearance has also been accorded to Chhatrasal and Mahan coal blocks.
He has urged Natrajan that permission for diversion of forest land in respect of the Amelia coal block should be accorded at the earliest in view of these facts. This will go a long way in meeting the energy needs of the state. In the letter to Civil Aviation Minister, Chouhan has said that Bhopal and Indore airports have been expanded as per international standards. Now, both these airports are ready to start international flights’ operations. The State Government has allotted land for expansion of both these airports.
He said that Indore is the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh and has large number of multinational and medium scale companies. Similarly, Bhopal is the state capital. The number of air passengers of international flights has increased manifold at both the airports. Chouhan has urged Ajit Singh to issue suitable instructions to enable commencement of international flight operations from Bhopal and Indore airports at the earliest.
