'Being captain of national team, no achievement’ Bhopal: Being a captain of a national team is no mean achievement. But in India people hardly adore the sportspersons of other games except cricket. Even in Bhopal JP Yadav of the city who played a handful of limited-over matches for the country and is fag end of his career is far ahead in terms of popularity and has large fan following and autograph seekers than another son of the soil Md Riazuddin, currently the captain of Indian Basketball Team. Very few people of the city heard his name either. This is the eternal saga for the sportspersons of other games save cricket who have accepted the truth in agony despite bringing laurels to the country in several occasions from the international arena. Riazuddin is not an exception. He was endowed with the captaincy of National Basketball Team two months back and the city is still indifferent to him. No drum was waiting for him when he returned home after sporting the captain’s cap. Riaz as he is popularly called by his closet circle expressed his pain for not getting what he deserves. He says, "It really hurts when no one takes interest in the sportspersons of other games in the country that is highly de-motivating for the players. On the other hand, the cricketers hit the headlines for just being in the team." It is not only the lack of fan following, the government is also not serious in promoting other games in the country and very little incentives are provided to these players who just aim for a job in Indian Airlines, Indian Oil or Railway for their daily bread. Riaz who also joined Indian Railway two years back accepted the fact that without money it is very difficult to attract the younger generation to this game. But he also informed that the situation has improved a lot in last two years. And, according to Riaz, the kudos should go to Harish Sharma, secretary of Basketball Federation of India. "Earlier we hardly had chances to take part in International Tournaments in abroad, but in last two years after Mr Sharma held the reign of Basketball Federation we have been taking part in lot of International Tournaments in and outside the country." Recently he captained India in 10th Crown Princes International Tournament in Thailand to silver medal in which almost eight top class Asian teams took part. In that particular tournament they defeated China, Japan and Lebanon, the countries that spend lot of money for the game. "Let alone developed nations like USA, UK or Australia, even the Asian teams get lot of assistance from the governments", rues Riaz. But while signing off he affirms that when they took to the court and wear national jersey these things hardly come to mind. "The only thing we think is about the prestige of the country." And at the end of the day it might be the only motivation that goads them on to do their job silently and in absence of public glare.
